Moisture meter

A moisture meter is a handheld device that estimates moisture near the surface of a material. On concrete, it gives a quick reading but doesn’t measure moisture deep in the slab. It’s useful for screening and finding wet spots. It isn’t a substitute for standardized moisture tests.

Do Moisture Meters Work on Concrete?

Only the right kind. A meter made for wood or drywall will max out on concrete, which doesn’t mean the floor is wet. It means the tool is wrong for the job.

A concrete moisture meter is built for slabs. You press it flat against the floor, and it reads roughly the top three-quarters of an inch without drilling. Think of it like a stud finder: great for showing where to look, not for telling you everything behind the wall.

How Installers Use a Concrete Moisture Meter

A good installer uses the meter to scan the whole floor fast and map damp areas. Those spots, plus a few typical ones, become the places for deeper moisture testing. Since surface readings say little about moisture deeper in the slab, the meter starts the job; it doesn’t finish it.

Meters are also handy after a leak or flood to see whether a floor has dried, and to compare one room with another.

Moisture Meter vs. Full Moisture Testing

  • Moisture meter: instant, no holes, reads near the surface. Good for screening.
  • In-slab probes: take longer and need small holes, but read inside the concrete. Better for deciding on a finish.
  • Surface emission kits: measure moisture leaving the surface over about a day.

The choice affects your floor. If deeper readings come back high, the plan may shift to a moisture-blocking primer or a breathable finish.

Moisture Meter FAQ

Are cheap moisture meters accurate?

Inexpensive pin meters are made for wood and give false high readings on concrete. Even good concrete meters only estimate surface moisture. They’re fine for spotting trouble, not for signing off on a floor.

What are the two main types of moisture meters?

Pin meters push two prongs into the material, and pinless meters read through a flat pad. Concrete meters are pinless. Pin meters are mostly for wood.

What is a normal moisture level for concrete?

There’s no single number. Each floor finish and primer has its own limit, and a surface meter reading alone doesn’t tell you if you’ve met it. Deeper testing does.
